How to Tame a Wolf in Minecraft (Complete Bones + Wolf Armor Guide)
Short answer: to tame a wolf in Minecraft, right-click it with Bones. Each bone has approximately a 33% chance to tame the wolf, so on average you'll need 3-7 bones per wolf. When tamed, the wolf gets a red collar (which you can dye to any of 16 colors), starts following you, attacks any mob you attack, and can be made to sit or stand. As of update 1.20.5, you can also equip your tamed wolf with Wolf Armor made from Armadillo Scutes for extra protection.
This guide covers the exact taming process, where to find different wolf breeds (there are 9 in Minecraft as of 1.20.5!), how to breed tamed wolves, and tips for keeping your wolf pack alive in tough situations.

The Taming Process (Step by Step)
Step 1: Get Bones
Bones drop from killed Skeletons (and from Skeleton spawners). Each Skeleton drops 0-2 bones (more with Looting III). Plan to gather 10-20 bones for safety.
Bones also appear in:
- Dungeon chests (the spider/zombie/skeleton spawner rooms)
- Fishing junk loot
- Stronghold chests
Step 2: Find a Wild Wolf
Wolves spawn naturally in:
- Forest — standard gray wolves
- Taiga — standard gray wolves
- Snowy Taiga — snowy (white-furred) wolves
- Old Growth Pine Taiga — same gray variants
- Snowy Slopes / Grove — Snowy wolves
- Sparse Jungle — Chestnut wolves (1.20.5+)
- Savanna Plateau — Spotted wolves (1.20.5+)
Wolves spawn in groups of 4. They wander, hunt sheep/rabbits, and don't attack you unless you attack them first.
Step 3: Right-click with a Bone
Hold a Bone. Right-click on the wild wolf. The wolf may or may not be tamed:
- If hearts appear immediately — the wolf is tamed
- If smoke/static particles appear — the taming failed; try again with another bone
Each bone has ~33% chance. Keep right-clicking until hearts appear. Average: 3 bones; range: 1-7 bones.
Step 4: The Tamed Wolf
Once tamed, the wolf:
- Gets a red collar (dye-able to any of 16 colors with dye)
- Starts following you (within 12 blocks)
- Sits when you right-click (right-click again to stand)
- Attacks any mob you attack
- Doesn't attack creepers (the safe-default behavior)
- Has 20 health (10 hearts)
- Can be healed by feeding any meat
The 9 Wolf Variants (1.20.5+)
Update 1.20.5 added 8 new wolf breeds beyond the original gray wolf. Each spawns in different biomes:
| Wolf Variant | Biome | Appearance |
|---|---|---|
| Pale (default) | Forest, Taiga | Light gray/white |
| Spotted | Savanna Plateau | White with black spots |
| Snowy | Grove, Snowy Slopes | Pure white |
| Black | Old Growth Pine Taiga | Solid black |
| Ashen | Snowy Taiga | Dark gray |
| Rusty | Sparse Jungle | Reddish brown |
| Woods | Forest | Brown with gray |
| Striped | Wooded Badlands | Tan with stripes |
| Chestnut | Old Growth Spruce Taiga | Brown-chestnut |
You can breed wolves of different variants — the baby randomly inherits one parent's variant. Combine variants to build a multi-colored pack.
Breeding Tamed Wolves
Once you have 2 tamed wolves, you can breed them:
- Bring both tamed wolves close together (~3 blocks).
- Hold any meat (raw chicken, raw beef, raw mutton, raw porkchop, raw rabbit, cooked variants, or even rotten flesh).
- Right-click each wolf to feed it. Pink hearts appear.
- A baby wolf spawns between them. The baby is automatically tamed and trusts the owner.
Babies grow up in 20 minutes. They inherit a random variant from one of the parents.
Wolf Armor (1.20.5+)
Wolf Armor was added in the "Armored Paws" update (1.20.5) and protects tamed wolves from damage.
How to craft Wolf Armor
You need 6 Armadillo Scutes. Craft on a crafting table in a specific pattern. See our armadillo guide for getting scutes (armadillos shed them naturally every ~5 minutes).
How to equip Wolf Armor
- Approach your tamed wolf
- Right-click the wolf with Wolf Armor in hand
- The armor visually equips on the wolf
- The wolf takes reduced damage from now on
Wolf Armor Repair
Wolf Armor takes damage over time as the wolf is attacked. To repair: right-click the wolf with an Armadillo Scute. Each scute repairs ~14% of the armor's durability.
Combat Behavior
Tamed wolves are excellent combat companions:
Auto-attack
When you attack a mob (any mob), all nearby tamed wolves join in. They follow the target and bite. A pack of 3-4 wolves can take down anything from Zombies to Iron Golems.
Defensive behavior
If a hostile mob attacks YOU, your tamed wolves defend automatically. Excellent for early-game survival.
Anti-Creeper safety
Wolves don't attack creepers by default. This prevents accidental creeper detonations near your wolves. You handle creepers; wolves handle zombies/skeletons/spiders.
Death
Wolves can die. If they take fall damage, mob damage, or environmental damage (fire, lava), they can die. Use Wolf Armor + sit them (right-click) before dangerous situations.
Wolf Pack Tactics
For optimal survival:
- Tame 4-6 wolves (don't go beyond — they get hard to manage)
- Equip Wolf Armor on each (24-36 Armadillo Scutes total)
- Dye their collars different colors to identify them
- Make them sit (right-click) when you're idle or sleeping
- Stand them up when you're exploring
- Heal frequently with meat — a healthy pack survives more
Common Questions
Can I tame a wild wolf if I attacked it?
Once you attack a wild wolf, it becomes hostile and won't accept bones. You'd need to wait for it to despawn (or kill it) and find a new one.
How do I make my wolf stop following me?
Right-click the wolf to make it sit. It'll stay in place until you right-click again to stand it up.
Can wolves swim?
Yes, but slowly. They follow you through water but can get stuck if currents are strong.
Why won't my wolf attack the creeper?
This is intentional — Mojang made wolves ignore creepers to prevent accidental creeper explosions near the wolf. You have to deal with creepers yourself.
Can wolves take fall damage?
Yes. Be careful when leading wolves down cliffs — use stairs or water buckets.
How many wolves can I have?
No hard limit. But 4-6 is the practical max — beyond that, they get hard to keep alive and follow.
Do wolves despawn?
No. Tamed wolves never despawn. Wild wolves also don't despawn (they're considered passive animals).
Why won't my wolf attack the creeper?
Repeat: wolves don't attack creepers by default. This is a safety feature.
Can I make my wolf attack a creeper anyway?
If you attack the creeper first, your wolf will join. Just hit the creeper once with anything, and your wolf assists.
Putting It All Together
The workflow for a loyal wolf pack:
- Kill 5-10 Skeletons to get 10-15 bones.
- Travel to a Forest or Taiga biome.
- Find wild wolves (in groups of 4).
- Right-click each with bones until hearts appear (3-7 bones average per wolf).
- Tame 2-4 wolves total.
- Bring them home using leads or by walking (they follow within 12 blocks).
- Breed them with any meat to expand the pack.
- Craft Wolf Armor from Armadillo Scutes for protection.
- Take your wolf pack into Nether Fortresses, Raids, or any combat.
