What Does Fortune Do in Minecraft? (Pickaxe Enchantment Explained)
Short answer: Fortune in Minecraft is a tool enchantment (mostly used on pickaxes) that increases the number of items dropped from blocks that drop something different than themselves. The classic example: a normal diamond ore drops 1 diamond. With Fortune III, a single diamond ore can drop up to 4 diamonds. Fortune works on diamond, emerald, redstone, lapis, coal, nether quartz, copper, glowstone, and several other block types. The maximum level is Fortune III.
Fortune was added in update 1.0 and is one of the two essential pickaxe enchantments (the other being Silk Touch — and the two are mutually exclusive, so you must choose). This guide covers exactly what Fortune does, the math behind it, every block it affects, and when to use Fortune over Silk Touch.
Quick Answer Table
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What does Fortune do? | Increases drops from blocks that drop a different item than the block itself |
| Max level | III |
| Average drop increase | Up to ~2.2× normal at Fortune III |
| Works on? | Pickaxe (mostly), shovel (gravel→flint), axe (saplings), hoe (some plants) |
| From enchanting table? | Yes — common enchant |
| Mutually exclusive with | Silk Touch on the same tool |
| Best targets | Diamond, Emerald, Redstone, Lapis, Coal, Nether Quartz, Glowstone, Melons |
| Doesn't affect | Iron ore drops, Stone, Cobblestone, Dirt (blocks that drop themselves) |
How Fortune Actually Works
Fortune affects only blocks that drop a different item than the block itself. Examples:
- Diamond Ore drops Diamond (item) — Fortune applies ✅
- Redstone Ore drops Redstone Dust (item) — Fortune applies ✅
- Stone drops Cobblestone (different item) — Fortune does NOT apply ❌ (cobblestone is the always-1 drop)
- Iron Ore drops Raw Iron — Fortune APPLIES (1.17+ change)
- Copper Ore drops Raw Copper — Fortune APPLIES
- Gold Ore drops Raw Gold — Fortune APPLIES
The math per level varies by block. For most ore-style blocks, the formula is:
- Fortune I — chance of 2× drops
- Fortune II — chance of 2× or 3× drops
- Fortune III — chance of 2×, 3×, or 4× drops
The average increase at Fortune III is roughly 2.2× the base drop, not a flat 4×. The max-drop result (4 per block at Fortune III) happens about 20% of the time on average. Mining 100 diamonds without Fortune yields about 220 diamonds with Fortune III on average.
The Best Targets for Fortune
Tier 1: Game-changing
- Diamond Ore — every diamond run is 2.2× more rewarding
- Emerald Ore — for villager trading economy
- Redstone Ore — produces 4–5 dust per ore at Fortune III
- Lapis Ore — needed for enchanting; Fortune yields huge quantities
Tier 2: Very helpful
- Coal Ore — early game fuel multiplier
- Nether Quartz Ore — builds, decoration
- Iron / Copper / Gold Ore — raw drops (1.17+)
- Ancient Debris — actually, this drops itself, so Fortune does NOT help. Use Silk Touch to bank then smelt later. (Common misconception!)
Tier 3: Situationally useful
- Glowstone — produces 4 dust per block with Fortune III (vs. 2–4 normally)
- Sea Lantern — produces 5 prismarine crystals at Fortune III
- Melon Block — more slices per melon
- Gravel (on shovel) — more flint chance per gravel
- Crops on Hoe — more seeds + items from wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot
- Saplings from oak/birch leaves — slightly higher drop rate
Fortune vs Silk Touch: The Big Decision
This is the single most important enchanting choice on your main pickaxe, because the two enchants are mutually exclusive:
- Pick Fortune III if you mine for resources (diamonds, redstone, emeralds, etc.) and want maximum drops. Best for general survival pickaxe.
- Pick Silk Touch if you want to mine blocks as themselves (ice, bookshelves, beehives with bees, ender chests). Useful but situational.
Most experienced players keep two pickaxes: one Fortune III for resource mining, one Silk Touch for specialty mining. Both should have Unbreaking III + Mending.
How to Get Fortune
Method 1: Enchanting table (common)
Fortune III commonly appears at 30-level enchant slots. Surround your enchanting table with 15 bookshelves and use level 30 + 3 lapis. Fortune III is one of the most common high-level enchants offered.
Method 2: Villager trade
Librarians offer Fortune books. Master-level librarians may have Fortune III books for 10–15 emeralds.
Method 3: Chest loot, fishing, ruined portal chests
Lower probability but possible.
Common Questions
Does Fortune work on iron ore?
Yes (since 1.17). Iron ore drops Raw Iron (a different item than the block), so Fortune applies. Pre-1.17 iron drops were the iron ore block itself (when using Silk Touch) or required smelting.
Does Fortune work on stone?
No. Stone drops Cobblestone in a fixed 1:1 ratio, with no variance. Fortune has no effect.
Does Fortune work on Ancient Debris?
No. Ancient Debris drops itself (the block), so Fortune doesn't apply. Use Silk Touch if needed for storage, then smelt later for Netherite Scraps.
Does Fortune affect smelting outputs?
No. Fortune only affects the initial mining drop. If you mine raw iron with Fortune III and then smelt it, you get 1 iron ingot per raw iron — Fortune doesn't double the smelting.
Can Fortune go higher than level III through commands?
Technically yes (Fortune IV, V, etc. with /enchant or NBT editing), but the formulas still cap behaviorally — Fortune V doesn't add meaningful gains over III.
Does Fortune work on shears?
Shears can't have Fortune, but they can have Silk Touch alternatives. For wool/leaves harvesting, just use unenchanted shears (they already do the job).
Does Fortune affect bone meal drops from skeletons?
No — that's mob drops, governed by Looting on swords.
Putting It All Together
The workflow for the optimal mining pickaxe:
- Mine a diamond pickaxe (Netherite preferred for durability).
- Visit your enchanting setup (15 bookshelves around an enchanting table).
- Roll for Fortune III at level 30 — usually the easiest top-tier roll.
- Combine with Unbreaking III, Mending, and Efficiency V on an anvil.
- Mine diamonds, redstone, lapis, emeralds with this pickaxe for 2.2× returns.
- Keep a second pickaxe with Silk Touch for specialty mining.
