How to Make Pixel Art in Minecraft

Minecraft pixel art is exactly what it sounds like: instead of one dot of colour per pixel, you use one block of colour. Your canvas is a flat wall in the world; each pixel of the source image becomes one block on that wall. A 64-wide image becomes a 64-block-wide wall. A 128-wide image becomes an 8-storey wall — you'll be scaffolding and remembering to stock up on materials.

The catch is Minecraft doesn't have 16 million colours like a PNG. It has about 48 saturated block colours plus a handful of natural blocks, so the generator has to quantise the image — pick the closest available block for every pixel. That step is what this tool does: it draws your image into a canvas at the width you chose, then looks up every pixel in the block palette you picked and swaps in the block whose colour is closest in RGB distance.

Choosing a Palette

Wool — the classic 16 colours. Soft, low-saturation. Sheep drop it, so it's cheap to farm. Best for: casual builds, characters, anything cartoony.

Concrete — 16 highly-saturated colours. Punchier than wool. Requires concrete powder + water, so more work to craft in bulk. Best for: logos, brand marks, portraits, anything you want to look vivid from a distance.

Terracotta — 16 muted earth tones. The best palette for anything with subtle shading. Best for: skin tones, landscapes, painterly scenes, pixel art of faces.

Full palette — all 48 coloured blocks plus a few naturals (planks, sandstone, ore blocks). Widest colour gamut and best for images that need very specific hues. The material shopping list gets long — expect 20+ block types — but the result matches the source image most faithfully.

Sizing Your Pixel Art

Bigger isn't always better. A 128-block-wide pixel art of a portrait is impressive but takes 20-40 stacks of block per material type and a full afternoon to build. Match the size to the subject and to the space you have.

  • 16-32 blocks: icons, single Minecraft mob faces, small logos. Builds in 15-30 minutes. Perfect for a single wall of your base.
  • 48-64 blocks: characters, medium logos, meme templates. Builds in 1-2 hours. The sweet spot for most projects.
  • 96-128 blocks: portraits, detailed scenes, landscape backgrounds. Builds in 3-6 hours. Needs scaffolding to reach the top.

Nearest and largest tip: always download the PNG blueprint. You'll build faster with a colour-key reference on a second screen than trying to eyeball it from the in-game overlay.

Building With the Blueprint

Step 1 — Frame the wall. Pick a flat spot and mark the corners of the finished pixel art size — the generator shows you the exact block dimensions above the download buttons. Place a marker block at each corner.

Step 2 — Build the outline. If your image has a strong outline, build that first. It'll act as a reference frame so you can spot alignment errors before you've placed 500 wool blocks.

Step 3 — Fill column by column. Work from left to right, top to bottom, one column at a time. Each column of the PNG blueprint is one vertical strip of blocks in the world. Don't skip around — it's much harder to spot mistakes.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Image too small on input. If your source image is 200×200 pixels and you ask for a 128-block-wide output, the tool has to upscale before it matches colours — you'll get muddy results. Feed in source images at least as wide as your target block count.

Wrong palette for the subject. Portraits in concrete look like plastic figurines. Logos in terracotta look faded. Match the palette to the mood of the source.

Transparency treated as a colour. The tool treats fully-transparent pixels as air (blank blocks). Semi-transparent pixels get mapped as if opaque — export your source with a solid background if you don't want the tool guessing.

Building on the ground instead of a wall. Pixel art is a flat 2D image — it goes on a vertical wall, one block deep. Building it lying on the ground makes it invisible from any useful angle. If you want a top-down build (banners, floor mosaics), it works — just remember it'll only look right from directly above.
