The Basic Roman Arch (Simplest)

A perfect half-circle. This is the arch — the one everyone thinks of.

Building a diameter-7 Roman arch (opening 5 wide × 4 tall)

  1. Pillars: two 3-block-tall pillars, 5 blocks apart (measured between inner faces).
  2. Arch curve: use our circle generator at diameter 7. Look at the top half of the circle blueprint — that's your arch shape.
  3. Place blocks matching the top-half of the diameter-7 circle above the pillars. Should be: 3 blocks flat across the top, curving down on each side.
  4. Optional keystone: replace the centre-top block with a distinct block (chiseled stone brick, gold, etc) as the keystone.

Building a diameter-11 Roman arch (opening 9 wide × 6 tall)

Same principle, larger circle:

  1. Pillars: two 4-5 block pillars, 9 blocks apart.
  2. Generate a diameter-11 circle outline. Use the top half above the pillars.
  3. The top row of the arch is 5 blocks flat; the curve is smoother than the smaller version.

Aqueduct (many Roman arches in a row)

Roman aqueducts stack multiple arches to span distance. To build:

  1. Decide arch diameter (usually 7-11). Space pillars accordingly — for diameter 7, pillars every 6 blocks (5 opening + 1 pillar).
  2. Build the sequence of pillars first.
  3. Then build each arch curve on top.
  4. Add a flat "aqueduct" channel on top spanning all the arches — 2 blocks wide, filled with water.
  5. Optional: second tier of smaller arches above the first (real Roman aqueducts sometimes had 2-3 tiers).

Gothic Pointed Arch

The signature of medieval cathedrals — two curves meeting at a point.

Building a diameter-9 Gothic arch (opening 7 wide × 8 tall)

  1. Pillars: 4-block-tall stone brick pillars, 7 apart.
  2. Left curve: take the top-right quadrant of a diameter-9 circle (the arch of a circle whose centre would be at the base of the left pillar). Place blocks matching that curve rising up-and-inward.
  3. Right curve: mirror the left. Take the top-left quadrant of a diameter-9 circle centred at the right pillar's base. Rises up-and-inward.
  4. The two curves meet at a point in the middle — that's the pointed peak.
  5. Keystone: place a distinctive block at the meeting point.

Aesthetic details

  • Ribbed vaulting: extend stone brick ribs from the arch peak outward across the ceiling
  • Trim: stone brick stairs surrounding the arch (facing outward from the opening) for a moulding effect
  • Stained glass: fill the arch opening with stained glass panes for a "window" version
  • Repeat: 3-5 Gothic arches in a row along a nave wall creates instant cathedral energy

Moorish Horseshoe Arch

The arch curves INWARD at the base — a horseshoe shape. Distinctive of Alhambra and Islamic architecture.

Building

  1. Build a full diameter-9 or -11 circle outline (not just a half).
  2. Remove the bottom 1/3 of the circle. What remains is a horseshoe shape.
  3. Place pillars where the arch would meet the ground — the pillars should support the curve where it narrows back inward.
  4. Optional: fill the inside of the horseshoe with intricate patterns using stained glass or terracotta.

Tudor (Flattened) Arch

Wide, low-profile arch — English manor house look. Not a true circle segment; more of a lozenge with rounded corners.

Segmental (Shallow) Arch

  1. Pillars: 3 blocks tall, span whatever distance (9-21).
  2. Curve: use only the top ~1/6 of a much larger circle. E.g., for a 15-wide opening with a shallow curve, use the top segment of a diameter-25 circle.
  3. The arch rises maybe 2-3 blocks above the pillar tops, then curves back down gently.

Bridge application

  1. Multiple segmental arches spanning a river or ravine.
  2. Each arch supports a flat roadway on top.
  3. Pillars are wider (2×2 or 3×3) at the base for river resistance.

Flat (Jack) Arch

Not really an arch — it's a flat span. But structurally, wedge-shaped stones "arch" horizontally to bear load. In Minecraft it's just a straight row of blocks.

  • Simplest doorway lintel: place a full-block row of stone brick across the top of a doorway. Done.
  • Decorative flat arch: use stone brick stairs on both ends (facing inward) with regular stone brick blocks between — creates a slight visual "wedge" effect.

Common Mistakes

Even-diameter arches

Arches work best with odd diameters — they have a clean centre keystone. Even-diameter arches have a flat top 2 blocks wide instead of a single keystone.

Pillars too thin

A 1-wide pillar under a diameter-15 arch looks precarious. Match pillar width to arch scale: 1-block pillars for arch diameter ≤7, 2×2 pillars for 9-15, 3×3 for larger.

No keystone

Real arches always have a distinct keystone at the top. Skip it and the arch looks incomplete. Even just a different-block replacement for the top centre block sells it.

Wrong scale for the space

A diameter-15 Roman arch in a 6-block-tall room looks squashed. Match arch height to ceiling height — the peak of the arch should be at least 1 block below the ceiling.

Common Questions

Can I use stairs for a smoother arch curve?

Yes. Stair blocks facing inward (into the arch opening) create a subtle curve softening the jagged pixel-block edges. Doubles the block usage but looks noticeably rounder.

How do I build an arch INTO a wall (not standalone)?

Build the wall first with a rectangular opening. Then place the arch curve blocks around the top of the opening. The wall becomes the "pillar" material naturally.

What about domed archways (arch above, dome above that)?
