How to Defeat the Ender Dragon in Minecraft (Complete Boss Fight Guide)
Short answer: to defeat the Ender Dragon, you need to first destroy all 10 End Crystals on top of the obsidian pillars (which heal the dragon), then attack the dragon directly with a bow + arrows or a sword. The dragon has 200 HP and 6 visual health bars. You destroy the End Crystals with a bow (or by punching them — they explode!) and then deal with the dragon's flying, breathing, and dive-attack patterns. Recommended gear: full Netherite armor with Protection IV, a bow with Power V + Infinity, a sword (or Mace) with Sharpness V + Mending, and 64+ arrows. The fight takes ~15-20 minutes for first-time fighters and you get 12,000 XP + the Dragon Egg as a reward.
The Ender Dragon is Minecraft's "final" boss — the closest thing the game has to a traditional ending. After defeating it, the credits roll and you can return to the Overworld. This guide covers the full preparation, the fight itself, advanced strategies, and what to do after.
Quick Answer Table
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Dragon HP? | 200 |
| Required items to reach the End | 12 Eyes of Ender (~12 Ender Pearls + Blaze Powder) |
| End Crystals to destroy first | 10 (on obsidian pillars) |
| Best weapon | Bow + Power V + Infinity (ranged) or Sword Sharpness V or Mace |
| Recommended armor | Full Netherite + Protection IV + Feather Falling IV (boots) |
| XP drop? | 12,000 (first kill; subsequent: 500) |
| Drops | Dragon Egg (Java, first kill only), Dragon's Breath (Bedrock) |
| Re-summon | 4 End Crystals at the portal |
Phase 1: Reach the End Dimension
Step 1: Get 12 Eyes of Ender
Eye of Ender = 1 Ender Pearl + 1 Blaze Powder. Ingredients:
- Ender Pearls: dropped by Endermen (kill in Overworld), or trade with Piglins in the Nether
- Blaze Powder: 1 Blaze Rod = 2 Blaze Powder. Blaze Rods come from killing Blazes in Nether Fortresses
Step 2: Find a Stronghold
Throw an Eye of Ender into the air — it flies toward the nearest Stronghold (within ~1000 blocks). Follow the direction it flies. Throw more eyes every 100-200 blocks until you reach the Stronghold.
Step 3: Find the End Portal room
Strongholds are mazes of corridors. The End Portal Room contains a 12-frame portal with some empty frames. Place an Eye of Ender in each empty frame.
Step 4: Activate the portal
Once all 12 frames have Eyes of Ender, the portal activates (purple swirling pool appears). Step in to teleport to the End.
Phase 2: The End Dimension Setup
You spawn on a small obsidian platform in the End. Below you is the void (instant death if you fall). The dragon flies around. 10 obsidian pillars stand at various heights, each topped with an End Crystal that heals the dragon when it's in range.
Critical first moves
- Place a bed for spawn point setup — no, wait, beds explode in the End too. Use a Respawn Anchor (requires Glowstone + Crying Obsidian).
- Place an Ender Chest with valuable items — you can retrieve them if you die
- Bring at least 1 stack of dirt or cobblestone — for emergency pillaring
Phase 3: Destroy All 10 End Crystals
End Crystals heal the dragon when it's near them. You MUST destroy all 10 before attacking the dragon seriously.
Crystal locations
Each crystal sits on top of an obsidian pillar. The pillars are different heights (some up to ~50 blocks tall). Some crystals are caged with iron bars; others are exposed.
How to destroy them
Method 1: Bow + Arrow (safest)
- Stand at the base of a pillar
- Aim up at the crystal
- One arrow hit = crystal explodes
- The explosion deals damage to nearby entities (including the dragon if it's there)
Method 2: Pillar up + Punch (fast but risky)
- Build dirt/cobblestone pillars up to the crystal level
- Punch the crystal directly (or use a sword)
- The crystal explodes — you take ~10 hearts of damage. Have Protection IV armor and a totem of undying!
Iron-caged crystals
Some crystals are surrounded by iron bars. You need to either:
- Pillar up and break the iron bars first, then attack the crystal
- Use Power V arrows that can shoot through gaps
Take your time. The dragon will fly around but rarely attacks while you're focused on crystals.
Phase 4: Fight the Dragon
With all 10 crystals down, the dragon's health bar is fully visible and it can no longer heal. Now attack.
Dragon attack patterns
- Charging dive — flies down toward you for a bite attack (deals ~10 damage)
- Dragon Breath — spits a purple breath cloud on the ground that does damage over time
- Knockback — when it hits you, you fly backward (and can fall off the obsidian island)
- Healing perch — perches on the central fountain to "heal" or just wait. Best time to attack with a sword.
Optimal weapons
- Bow + Power V + Infinity + 1 arrow — endless arrows, hits the dragon at range
- Diamond/Netherite Sword + Sharpness V + Mending — for when the dragon perches
- Mace + Density V or Breach IV — devastating against the perched dragon. See our Mace guide.
Optimal armor + accessories
- Full Netherite armor with Protection IV (any tier)
- Boots with Feather Falling IV (mitigates fall damage from being knocked off)
- Totem of Undying in offhand (revives you if you die — once)
- Carved Pumpkin on head — Endermen won't attack you while wearing one!
- Golden Apple (Notch Apple ideal but rare) — for Regeneration buff
The "perch attack" strategy
The dragon periodically perches on the central fountain to rest or "heal." This is your golden opportunity:
- Wait at the central fountain (the structure where you'd respawn the dragon)
- When the dragon perches, attack with sword/Mace — multiple hits possible
- Each hit deals significant damage; the dragon eventually takes off and flies away
- Repeat. 4-5 perch attacks usually kills the dragon.
Phase 5: Victory and the Aftermath
When the dragon dies:
- A glowing pillar of XP orbs appears at the center — collect them (12,000 XP first kill)
- The credits roll on Java (you can skip)
- The Dragon Egg appears on the obsidian portal (Java only)
- The End Portal opens — step through to return to the Overworld
Bonus: Getting the Dragon Egg (Java)
The Dragon Egg is a trophy item. It can't be mined like normal blocks — touching it teleports it randomly. Method to get it:
- Place a torch directly under the Dragon Egg
- Punch the egg — it falls and breaks the torch
- The egg now drops as an item
- Pick it up — it's yours
Re-summoning the Dragon
You can re-summon the Ender Dragon multiple times after the first kill:
- Get 4 End Crystals (craft: 1 ghast tear + 1 Eye of Ender + 7 glass)
- Place them at each face of the central fountain
- The dragon respawns
- Subsequent kills give 500 XP (not 12,000)
Re-summoning is mainly for fun, additional XP, and Dragon's Breath (used in lingering potions).
Common Mistakes
"I keep getting knocked into the void"
The dragon's knockback can send you flying off the obsidian island. Mitigation:
- Build walls/edges with cobblestone around the island
- Wear Feather Falling IV boots
- Have a totem of undying in your offhand
- Don't fight near edges
"I keep dying"
Almost always: insufficient armor or too few crystals destroyed. Bring Netherite + Protection IV minimum. Don't fight the dragon with crystals still up.
"The Endermen are attacking me"
Wear a carved pumpkin on your head — Endermen ignore you. Or just don't make eye contact (don't look at their faces).
Putting It All Together
The end-to-end Ender Dragon fight workflow:
- Reach late game: Netherite gear, Mending, Sharpness V or Density V on Mace
- Get 12 Eyes of Ender (Ender Pearls + Blaze Powder)
- Find Stronghold (throw Eye of Ender to track)
- Activate End Portal in Stronghold
- Step through to the End
- Destroy all 10 End Crystals (bow or pillar-up method)
- Attack the dragon — focus on perch attacks for max damage
- Defeat the dragon (200 HP, ~4-6 perch attacks)
- Collect 12,000 XP, claim Dragon Egg, return through End Portal
