How to Get Trial Keys

1. Find a Trial Chamber: see our Trial Chambers guide.
2. Walk up to a Trial Spawner. It activates and spawns mobs; how many depends on how many players are nearby.
3. Kill every mob it spawns.
4. The spawner ejects a reward for each player. Half the time that's a Trial Key (for everyone); otherwise it's an item such as food or arrows.

How to Get Ominous Trial Keys

1. Get an Ominous Bottle: kill a Pillager captain (the one with the banner) outside a raid, or find one in a vault or reward chest.
2. Drink it to get Bad Omen, then walk up to a Trial Spawner. Bad Omen turns into Trial Omen and nearby spawners become ominous: tougher mobs, plus potions and projectiles dropped on you during the fight.
3. Clear the Ominous Trial Spawner. There's a 30% chance it drops an Ominous Trial Key for every player; otherwise you get food or potions.
4. Use the key on an Ominous Vault. They have a darker texture and sit in harder-to-reach spots, on altars with red candles.

How Per-Player Vault Loot Works

• Player A uses a key on a Vault and gets a random roll of loot.
• Player B uses their own key on the same Vault and gets their own roll.
• Player A can't open that Vault again.
• A Vault remembers up to 128 players, so on huge servers the oldest players eventually get another turn.

Vault Loot (Java Edition)

Regular Vault

• Common: emeralds, arrows and poison arrows, iron ingots, Wind Charges, honey bottles
• Less common: diamonds, golden carrots, Ominous Bottles (I–II), enchanted bows, crossbows, iron or diamond axes and chestplates
• Enchanted books, including Mending, Riptide, Loyalty, Channeling, Impaling, Sharpness, Efficiency, Fortune, Silk Touch and Feather Falling
• Rare extras: a Trident (about 2%), a Golden Apple, the Bolt armor trim, the Guster banner pattern, and the "Precipice" music disc

Ominous Vault

• Heavy Core (7.5%): the rare ingredient for the Mace
• Enchanted Golden Apple, diamonds and blocks of diamond, emeralds and blocks of emerald
• Enchanted books: Wind Burst I (only found here), Breach or Density, and others
• 8–12 Wind Charges, Slowness IV arrows, Ominous Bottles (III–V)
• The Flow armor trim, the Flow banner pattern and the "Creator" music disc

Common Questions

Can I break a Vault for its loot?

No. A Vault can be mined, very slowly, but it drops nothing. The only loot is what it ejects when you use a key.

Do Vaults work in survival without cheats?

Yes. Trial Chambers generate naturally and everything above is normal survival gameplay.

Can I collect a Vault block?

Not in survival. Vaults are only available from the Creative inventory or commands.
