Egyptian Pyramid (Smooth Sides)
The classic Giza silhouette — smooth angled sides, sandstone, capstone. Requires an odd-numbered base width so it has a true centre.
Layer sizing
For an N×N base (N is odd), each layer above is (N-2)×(N-2). Total layers = (N+1)/2.
- Base N=21: layers 21, 19, 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1 → 11 layers, height 11.
- Base N=31: layers 31, 29, 27, ..., 1 → 16 layers, height 16.
- Base N=51: layers 51, 49, ..., 1 → 26 layers, height 26.
Building steps
- Mark out the base square on flat ground (use marker blocks at each corner).
- Layer 1: fill the entire N×N square with sandstone.
- Layer 2: place a stack of blocks 1 layer up, offset 1 block inward on every side. So on a 21×21 base, layer 2 is 19×19 centered on layer 1.
- Continue: each layer 1 block inward on all four sides. Corners align diagonally.
- Top: layer N is a single block. Optionally place a gold block here as the capstone (real pyramids sometimes had them).
Material variation
- Pure sandstone: monolithic Giza look. Boring on its own — see next bullet.
- Sandstone + cut sandstone bands: use cut sandstone every 4th layer for a subtle stripe pattern.
- Sandstone body + smooth sandstone accents: sandstone for most layers, smooth sandstone for the top 3-5 layers (marks the "capstone zone").
- Weathered look: mix in orange terracotta and coarse dirt at random for a desert-worn effect.
Interior chambers
Real Egyptian pyramids had internal passages and chambers. To add one:
- Choose a starting point on the base — usually the middle of the north side.
- Carve a 2×3 tunnel angling up and inward. Use stair blocks for the sloped floor.
- Tunnel leads to a chamber: 5×5×3 room somewhere near the pyramid's centre, ~1/3 of the way up.
- Add torches / lanterns for lighting.
- Place a chest (loot?), maybe a mob spawner room, hidden pressure-plate traps.
Mayan Pyramid (Stepped)
The stepped silhouette from Chichén Itzá / Tikal. Each layer is set inward, but with visible step "risers" on the outside instead of smooth angles.
Layer sizing
Each "step" is 3 blocks high (2 wall + 1 tread). Between steps, the pyramid narrows by 2 blocks on each side (4 total).
- Base 25×25: step 1 = layers 1-3 at 25×25; step 2 = layers 4-6 at 21×21; step 3 = layers 7-9 at 17×17; and so on, tapering to a 5×5 platform at the top.
- Total steps for base 25: 5 steps, height 15.
Building steps
- Base: 25×25 filled square, 3 blocks tall (mossy cobble + cobblestone mix for a jungle-worn look).
- Step 2 platform: 21×21 fill on top of step 1, 3 blocks tall.
- Continue tapering — each step is 4 blocks narrower on each dimension, 3 blocks tall.
- Top platform: 5×5 or 7×7, flat, for a shrine or altar.
- Central staircase: on one face (usually north), carve a 3-block-wide staircase running from base to top. Use stone stairs for the treads.
- Shrine: small 3×3×3 stone brick structure on the top platform. Optional torch, chest.
Aesthetic touches
- Vines climbing the sides (place vines on the vertical block faces)
- Jungle log borders at each step level
- Water features: small pools at the base corners
- Overgrown look: cover the base steps with grass blocks and ferns
Modern Glass Pyramid (Louvre Style)
The all-glass pyramid — a Louvre or Chinese Pyramid Museum aesthetic.
Building steps
- Base: iron block frame — 15×15 square outline (just the perimeter, not filled).
- Corner columns: 4 iron block pillars rising 15 blocks (height = base width for a steeper pyramid).
- Diagonal edges: connect the base corners to the apex using iron block stair-steps. From each base corner, rise 1 block up and 1 block inward until you meet at the top.
- Fill panels: glass blocks (or glass panes for thin panels) fill the triangular faces between the iron frame.
- Interior lighting: 4 sea lanterns at the base corners, one at the apex — glass lets the light through beautifully at night.
Ice Pyramid
Same shape as the Egyptian pyramid, but with ice blocks. Reflective, futuristic, works well in snowy biomes.
- Layer 1-3: packed ice base.
- Middle layers: alternating packed ice + blue ice for a subtle shimmer.
- Top layers: blue ice with a snow block capstone.
- Warning: don't build in warm biomes — ice melts. Snowy Plains, Frozen Peaks, or an igloo interior are safe zones.

Speed Building

Common Mistakes
Even-numbered base width
A 20×20 base can't taper cleanly to a single-block point (it goes 20, 18, 16, ..., 2, and then what?). Always use odd base widths for smooth pyramids.
Too-steep or too-shallow angle
Egyptian pyramids have a ~52° angle — that's what "1 block inward per layer" produces. Steeper (2 inward per layer) looks like a spike. Shallower (1 inward per 2 layers) looks like a hill.
Boring solid interior
A filled pyramid with no interior is just a decorative object. Hollow it out for a tomb or temple. Add corridors, chambers, traps.
Placed on uneven terrain
Flatten the base area first. A pyramid rising from a hill looks broken.

Can I build a hollow pyramid?
Yes — build the outer shell (each layer just the perimeter, not filled), then the interior is open space. Great for tomb interiors.
How do I add hieroglyphs?
Item frames on the walls with painted maps (mapart), or use light/dark sandstone alternations to create pixelart symbols on the vertical faces.
What's the tallest pyramid I can build?
Minecraft's max build height is Y=320 in 1.18+. A pyramid with a 639-wide base would reach Y=320, but that's absurd. Practical max is a base of ~101, which is 51 blocks tall — visually massive.
Do I need to build interior chambers?
No — a solid pyramid works as a decorative monument. But chambers add gameplay: hidden loot, mob spawners, redstone traps.
